Transport Engineering in Australia

The National Committee on Transport Engineering (NCTE) produces a bi-annual publication, Transport Engineering in Australia.

Transport Engineering in Australia covers rail, road, air and sea modes, and includes both passenger and freight transport as well as telecommunications in a travel/transport context; reflecting the multi-disciplinary nature of the profession. Contributions include not only the traditional engineering areas covering design, construction, operations and maintenance but also planning, economics, behavioural science and policy analysis.

Past editions on Transport Engineering in Australia are available from the Engineers Media website.

The Transportation Research Forum (TRF) produces a periodic newsletter, TRF News, that is available from their website.

Soft Soil DVD

The NSW Road and Traffic Authority (RTA) has prepared an educational DVD on how they are treating soft soils for the Ballina bypass Pacific Highway upgrade and managing the new highway after opening to traffic.A combination of different soft soil treatments have been used to build the project, including:

  • Vacuum consolidation (a first in Australia)
  • Lightweight fill
  • Stone columns
  • Deep soil mixing
  • Dynamic replacement
  • A low embankment strategy
  • Wick drains

The DVD can be viewed here , or on the Ballina bypass Pacific Highway upgrade project website at www.rta.nsw.gov.au/pacific.
