In 2019 Engineers Australia celebrates its Centenary, this is a significant milestone for our organisation and a chance to stress the critical role engineering plays in the lives of all Australians. A centenary is time to take stock. To look back and marvel at our accomplishments. Engineers have helped transform the world: who in 1919 would’ve imagined where technology would be today?
Waste is a continuing problem for us all. In Victoria alone, we are capable of producing more than 12 million tonnes of waste a year, and this number is growing rapidly. How do we manage this vast abundance, other than moving it to landfill, safely, economically and with the potential to create renewable and sustainable energy sources for our future?
Nulka is a defence system that employs a hovering rocket and advanced countermeasures to serve as a decoy to protect naval ships from anti-ship missiles, and Australia's most successful defence export. This lecture will track the Nulka project from the initial concept in 1976, through technology development and testing activities in the 1980s, to full scale design and demonstration, manufacture, and continuing investment to improve the technology.
