Undergraduate Thesis Prize

About this award

  • This prize recognises individual excellence in undergraduate project work in automation, control and instrumentation (ACI) engineering. The award aims to:
  • encourage undergraduate interest in ACI Engineering
  • enhance student knowledge and application of ACI Engineering disciplines
  • encourage academic participation in ACI Engineering as part of undergraduate education.

Nomination criteria

Nominations are to include responses to the following three questions:

  1. What innovation is involved in this project?
  2. What is the value or potential value of the project to Australian industry?
  3. Why should your project thesis win the ACI Undergraduate Thesis Prize?

Each response should not exceed 200 words.

The project reported in the thesis will be assessed by its:

  • innovation
  • technical merit
  • intellectual quality
  • industry relevance
  • integration of automation, control and instrumentation

with respect to the thesis:

  • the general quality of the presentation.

Evaluation of the thesis (and project work reported) will be with regard to:

  • the relative magnitude of the project effort (as a proportion of the individual students' final year workload
  • the resources available to the student/s.

In addition, for team projects:

  • the size of the team - number of students and range of skills
  • team organisation and interaction.

Terms & Conditions

Nominations are eligible if:

  • The project work is undertaken as part of the award of a professional undergraduate qualification relevant to ACI and reported in the form of an academic thesis.
  • For an individual project submission, a statement to the effect that the work reported in the thesis is the bona fide work of the student alone, signed by the applicant and endorsed by the supervisor.
  • For a team project submission, an explanatory statement listing all the team members and detailing the roles of each and of the supervising (non-student) participants

Presentation of award

The presentation of the prize will take place at a suitable formal occasion of Engineers Australia, such as a national conference appropriate to the subject area of the project work. The prize consists of a medal, a framed certificate and $1000 in prize money.
