Adapting Priority Coastal Recreational Infrastructure for Climate Change

Extensive investment has been made along the NSW coastline into public infrastructure that is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. This includes recreational infrastructure, such as wharves, jetties, beaches, promenades, parks, pools, pathways and boat ramps.

MHL with SCCG (Sydney Coastal Councils Group) have developed an assessment methodology and decision framework for priority recreational coastal infrastructure assets. The assessment method is a tool that councils (and other foreshore managers) can use to evaluate the condition and vulnerability of that item to the impacts of climate change and estimate likely future maintenance or retro-fitting requirements; and a decision-framework and cost-benefit analysis of maintaining the infrastructure asset against possible alternative actions.

This project will provide coastal councils and managers with a process tool to make more rational and strategic decisions in responding to the effects of climate change, and to maximize public value for money by building resilience through explicit triggers and well-defined funding models.

The tool has been trialed and refined at several case studies within urban and rural council settings. This presentation will present the tool and discuss some of the real-life examples extracted from the project.
