Fatigue Testing of Railway Draft Gears

Rockhampton Regional Group Annual Group Meeting, 2017 Queensland President's Visit and Technical Talk on Fatigue Testing of Railway Draft Gears.
Fatigue Testing of Railway Draft Gears

The first part of this event will be 15 minutes to vote in the 2018 Rockhampton Regional Group.  To nominate you will need to register to attend this event and tick the box that nominates you in this process.

After this will be a 20 minute presentation by the 2017 Queensland Division President, Chris Nielsen on Engineers Australia matters and future direction.

Then the group will have the technical session as outlined below:

The Centre for Railway Engineering at Central Queensland University has designed and built a laboratory rig to emulate field conditions for draft gears and allow proof tests and accelerated fatigue tests. The rig has been made large enough to include a wagon stub sill and a coupler pair (or drawbar) so that all draft gear components (knuckle, coupler, yoke, and draft gear and stub sill) can be evaluated simultaneously. The design considerations cover the expected modes of use: static proof tests, operational in-train forces and accelerated fatigue testing of components. The first major component test program has been completed, with over 1 million stress reversal cycles performed. This talk will present the performance and fatigue testing results of draft gears and coupling.

Light refreshments will be served.
