FOCUS Brisbane | Recession Proof Yourself as an Engineer

Topic: Recession-Proof Your Career

Time: 5:30 PM for a 6:00 PM start

(Drinks and nibbles will be provided)

Note that this talk will also be accessible via webinar.

Recession proofing your career has become necessary. There was once a time when jobs were plentiful and professionals servicing jobs were in demand. However, these times have passed. Today, there is an oversupply of engineers within industries, namely, oil & gas, mining, manufacturing, coal-fired power generation, transmission, and distribution. This means that there is a higher level of competition for a lower number of jobs being advertised. This has resulted in a "hunter mentality" which is now necessary to survive and thrive. This means that the ability to understand the broader landscape (as a hunter would) should be innate.

Similar to hunting, the ability to time one's approach to the environment, understanding of your strengths and weaknesses, being aware of what to hunt down and what to leave aside, when to collaborate and when to hunt alone and the ability to build up reserves (financial and skills-based) during better times, are all essential skills required for survival.

Recession proofing one’s career is all about recognising that monopolies rarely continue forever and that one must change and possess a unique selling proposition in order to survive in today's job market.
