Presentation topic: Lessons learnt and key considerations for large retaining walls in the marine environment
Dr Manh Tran is a Chartered Professional Engineer with a wide range of experience across the geotechnical engineering field. He is the Principal and Geotechnical Technical Leader for Southern region (VIC, ACT and TAS) within Jacobs.
His work experience covers both ANZ and global projects in Africa, North America, Middle East, India, South East Asia, the Pacific, including multi-billion dollar onshore, near shore and offshore developments. Manh’s technical expertise covers a broad spectrum of geotechnical engineering from onshore and offshore site investigations to complex foundation analysis, design, construction supervision and specialist support.
Manh has been a Geotechnical Lead for many projects involving deep excavations and retaining wall design, including due diligence and legal reviews.
Dr Gary Chapman

Presentation topic: Near shore retaining walls in marine environments pose special challenges in design and construction
Gary will demonstrate these special challenges through case study examples which will highlight the many unusual aspects that need to be considered in the design and construction of such walls.
Dr Gary Chapman is a Principal Geotechnical Engineer with Golder Associates based in Melbourne.
He has more than 35 years’ experience in foundation engineering across the globe working as either a piling contractor or a geotechnical consultant. He has also held board level positions in piling contracting companies and geotechnical consulting companies.
Gary’s experience includes the design and analysis of deep foundation and retention systems and the analysis, design, specification and assessment of pile driveability, and pile testing (including high and low strain dynamic testing, static load testing and Osterberg cell testing of many types of piles). He has been a key engineer in the design and construction of hydraulic cut off walls constructed by diaphragm wall techniques using concrete or cement bentonite, soil bentonite or cutter soil mixing techniques.
Gary has published more than 25 peer reviewed technical papers and has presented technical papers at a number of international geotechnical and foundation engineering conferences.
