Retaining Wall

Innovative and water applications In Retaining Wall Design

Join us to hear from world renowned industry experts about innovative retaining wall systems that are changing the way we design retaining walls and relieve some of the limitations imposed by existing retaining systems. The presentation will also look at retaining walls used in water applications such as sea walls, embankments and storm water channels.

Key themes covered:

  • Innovations in retaining wall systems

  • Products that utilise existing design principle that improve constructability

  • Whole of life design that is durable enough to provide optimum performance

  • Australian Standards and quality assurance compliance

Speakers

Dr Manh Tran (CPEng, RPEQ, NER)
Principal & Technical Leader, Jacobs

Presentation topic: Lessons learnt and key considerations for large retaining walls in the marine environment

Dr Manh Tran is a Chartered Professional Engineer with a wide range of experience across the geotechnical engineering field. He is the Principal and Geotechnical Technical Leader for Southern region (VIC, ACT and TAS) within Jacobs.

His work experience covers both ANZ and global projects in Africa, North America, Middle East, India, South East Asia, the Pacific, including multi-billion dollar onshore, near shore and offshore developments. Manh’s technical expertise covers a broad spectrum of geotechnical engineering from onshore and offshore site investigations to complex foundation analysis, design, construction supervision and specialist support.

Manh has been a Geotechnical Lead for many projects involving deep excavations and retaining wall design, including due diligence and legal reviews.

Dr Chris Haberfield (BSc, BE(Hons), PhD, FIEAust, CPEng, RPEQ)
Principal, Golder Associates Pty Ltd

Presentation topic: Near shore retaining walls in marine environments pose special challenges in design and construction
Chris will demonstrate these special challenges through case study examples which will highlight the many unusual aspects that need to be considered in the design and construction of such walls.

Dr Chris Haberfield is a Principal Geotechnical Engineer with Golder Associates Pty Ltd.  He is internationally recognised for his work on foundation structure interaction and soft, weak and weathered rock and in particular the analysis, design, laboratory and field testing, construction techniques and response of engineering works (e.g. foundations) in these materials. Chris brings high level engineering skills and technical knowledge and a practical approach which have been developed through 20 years of research and teaching and high level consulting to industry as an academic followed by 17 years as a consultant solving high level technical issues for a wide variety of projects. Some examples include review and value engineering for Melbourne Metro stations, the new Gateway Bridge tender design and North-South Bypass tunnel in Brisbane.

Chris has published over 140 refereed papers many of them dealing with ground structure interaction problems, pile performance, retaining walls and analysis of such problems. Chris has been awarded the 2005 Victor Milligan Award, the 2007 EH Davis Memorial Lecture, the 2009 Jack Morgan Award and the 2nd Gregory Tschebotarioff Lecture (2017).
