Ir Dr. Anthony Ma, Principal Consultant of the Hong Kong Productivity Council, presents research into a three-step effluent discharge process that could kick-start the decentralisation of food waste recycling systems in Hong Kong, on Friday the 20th July.

One of the most promising technologies in our day and age for tackling the food waste disposal problem is Anaerobic digestion, the process of converting food waste to biogas.

The Hong Kong government is encouraging the increased use of biogases, as they are a good source of renewable energy and moves Hong Kong towards meeting the carbon intensity reduction target set in the Climate Action Plan 2030+.

Before we can move towards wide spread Anaerobic digestion however, the government would need to build a new network of Organic Resources Recovery Centres (ORRCs). Finding locations suitable for these ORRCs has proven challenging and it will be a lengthy planning and construction period to create these new centres. Decentralisation plants also need to serve clusters of various food waste sources and create end products that would have a high market value in order to achieve financial viability and attract the private sector’s participation.

The solution to this challenge was the development of a novel three-step zero effluent discharge process. A decentralised system that would be more robust, more compact and more effective in disposing and converting food waste, as well as being easier to operate than conventional digestion facilities.

This presentation will be present the research into this new three-step discharge process.

Ir Dr. Anthony Ma 

 

Ir Dr. Anthony Ma is the Principal Consultant of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC). Dr. Ma has about 30 years of professional experience in environmental research and engineering consultancy, specialising in water management and food waste recycling. He is head of the Environmental Technology and Solution (ETS) Centre, as well as the Environment and Product Innovation (EPI) Laboratory. Dr. Ma is the Past Hong Kong Branch Chairman of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM HK), advisor of the World Green Organization (WGO) and the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE - HK Branch)and a founding fellow of Hong Kong Institute of Qualified Environmental Professionals (HKIQEP). He is invited to serve in a number of committees, including the Expert Committee on Plumbing Materials, Water Pollution Control Appeal Board Panel, Product Eco-responsibility Appeal Board Panel, Research Project Vetting Committee of the Environmental, Conservation Fund (ECF).
