There have been major advances in the technology and operational principles used to implement Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) in urban public transport networks. Technologies include new cleaner energy sources, low floor accessible vehicles, larger and higher capacity vehicles, signalling and control systems. Operational innovations include simplified timetables, signal priority and pre-emption, gated stops, and on board ticket validation. The range and potential scope of applications for BRT and LRT is increasing.
This seminar will present recent innovations in BRT and LRT technology and innovations. The aim is to better understand criteria for choosing between the two, and knowing when one or the other may be more appropriate. The two speakers will draw on recent experience from projects such as the planned Brisbane Metro BRT and Auckland LRT.
