Victoria Dam, Perth Observatory and Masonmill Restaurant

The Retired Engineers Group will be hosting a visit to the Victoria Dam at Carmel and the Perth Observatory at Bickley with lunch at Masonmill Restaurant in Carmel.

The original Victoria Dam was constructed in 1891.  It was the first dam in Western Australia and it became the main drinking water supply for Perth.  In 1991 a new dam was constructed just upstream of the original dam and this was the first roller compacted concrete dam in Western Australia.  A senior representative of the Waster Corporation of Western Australia will be on site to tell us about the dams.  And as an added bonus morning tea will served!

In the afternoon we will be visiting the Perth Observatory in Bickley.  The Perth Observatory was originally situated at Mt Eliza just to the north of Kings Park and overlooking Parliament House.  In the mid 1960’s the Observatory was relocated to its present site in Carmel where it continued to function under the direct control of the State Government until late 2014 when operational funding ceased.  Since July 2015 the Observatory has operated under the control of the Perth Observatory Volunteer Group (POVG), an incorporated not for profit body, in a Community Partnership agreement with the State Government.  POVG is dedicated to the Observatory continuing as a scientific and heritage educational facility.  Under the guidance of the volunteers we will seeing the museum with its heritage time keeping and telescopic equipment as well as some of the telescopes currently in use.

There is some walking and steps involved at the Observatory but with the exception of the Lowell Telescope I think all will be accessible by our members. It can be a little cooler at the Observatory site compared to Perth so if it is a cool day be prepared with some warmer clothing.

Personal Protection Equipment - Closed in shoes and long sleeved shirts and long pants are required to be worn.  Water Corporation has also suggested a hat and sunglasses.

If any other PPE is required it will be supplied by the Water Corporation.

Lunch will be at the Masonmill Restaurant and Gardens at Carmel.
