World Solar Challenge

The World Solar Challenge is an event that allows university students to complement their education with an experience centred around collaboration, innovation and environmental stewardship.

Using creativity and engineering skills, students design, build and race solar powered cars from the Northern Territory to South Australia. The 3000km journey is one where steel and sunlight meet innovation and commitment – each car that crosses the finish line also brings us closer to a better tomorrow.

Engineering a solar-powered future

For over three decades, the World Solar Challenge has driven young Australians towards impressive feats of engineering. It not only benefits the students who participate but also the future of transport, as the parameters of the competition drive the creation of unique efficiency-focused features for electric vehicles.

Inspired by the famous 1982 solar-powered journey across Australia made by Hans Tholstrup and Larry Perkins, the World Solar Challenge is an exciting and rewarding endeavour for university students. Working in teams and managing constraints, rules and regulations teaches real-world engineering skills that won’t be found in a book or lecture hall.

Working with a maximum of six square metres of solar panels and in conjunction with institutions and industry, students defy boundaries for the goal of energy efficiency. We've come a long way since Tholstrup and Perkins' home-built vehicle however there's still plenty of room for progress.

Engineers, cars and sunshine

Students work in conjunction with institutions, individuals and organisations of private enterprise to explore and surpass the supposed limits of solar power and electric car efficiency. With three vehicle classes to choose from – Challenger, Cruiser and Adventure – there's something for every engineering student.

Pioneering solar power and efficiency for electric vehicles is more than a challenge, it’s a demand for a future where conservation is key. Fuelled by sunshine, the continual improvements made by those in the World Solar Challenge resonate across our industry and inspire engineers the world over.
