Engineers Australia’s Qatar Chapter celebrated its fourth anniversary and centenary celebration gala dinner on Wednesday the 6th of November at W Hotel, West Bay, Doha. The event brought together more than 130 members, guests, partners, sponsors, and friends who celebrated the achievements of the past 12 months and highlighted the passion and excitement for the engineering community in Qatar.
Throughout the evening, Master of Ceremony, Mr. Justin Kerr-Stevens engaged the guests with his personal experiences and humor, Mr. Kerr-Stevens is the Chair of QANZBA (Qatar Australia & New Zealand Business Association). The event started with the national anthems of Qatar and Australia as well as the the tradition of commencing by reciting some Quran verses by Khaled Emran.
Eng. Mustafa El Cherkawi, President of Engineers Australia Qatar Chapter outlined some of the top world-changing Australian inventions that changed our way of living, he talked about Qatar's achievements and the future of engineering. Then, Mustafa introduced the Qatar Chapter Committee and National Team that work together to host technical talks, site visits, competitions, and membership/chartership workshops.
Engineers Australia Executive General Manager, Mr. Jeff Hughes, addressed the guests congratulating Qatar on their successes and commended Qatar Chapter committee members for their achievements in promoting the engineering field, moreover he welcomed all attendees to the International World Engineering Convention (WEC 2019) to be hosted in Melbourne, Australia.
The Australian Ambassador to Qatar H.E. Jonathan Muir spoke about his grandfather, who started his career as an engineer in 1923 on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. He spoke about Australian Engineers and engineering companies who had played a prominent role in Qatar over the past two decades. Moreover, he commended all engineers for their contributions on local projects and highlighted the importance of their role in the development of Qatar.
Mr. Hamoda Youssef, Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC), head of communications spoke about the growth of QGBC and the successful partnership with the EA Qatar Chapter. Dr. Khalid Kamal Naji the Dean of the College of Engineering provided an insight into his expertise in the engineering field, he talked about the “International Conference on Civil Infrastructure & Construction” which will be conducted early 2020.
Engineers Australia Qatar Chapter did sign a collaboration MoU with the Lean Construction Institute Qatar (LCI-Q), Dr. Abdulla Alsayed the president of LCI-Q addressed the importance of this collaboration to further benefit members and advance the engineering field.
Congratulations to our new Chartered and Fellowes who were recognized at this event. Moreover, Engineers Australia Qatar Chapter recognized a local volunteering organization, Doha Environmental Actions Project (DEAP) for their contribution to sustain and preserve the environment and sand beaches in Qatar.
