Engineer of the year awards

Recognising outstanding engineering performance.

These awards celebrate the people we’ve looked up to and been inspired by this year, no matter what stage of their career they’re at. Specifically, we’re looking for the engineers who’ve created work that:

  • Contributes to the wellbeing of people and communities.
  • Is resourceful, innovative and aesthetically appealing.
  • Displays creativity and ingenuity in the use of materials or methods.
  • Builds on Engineers Australia’s purpose and strategic vision.
  • Promotes the engineering profession.
  • Amounts to a notable engineering career.

You’ll find everything you need to complete a nomination in the people awards handbook. 

We’ll present six people awards based on the occupational categories for engineering professionals, with the emerging tier for those in the early stages of their careers. Every year, one winner is selected for each category.  

  • Emerging Professional Engineer of the Year 
  • Emerging Engineering Technologist of the Year 
  • Emerging Engineering Associate of the Year 
  • Professional Engineer of the Year 
  • Engineering Technologist of the Year 
  • Engineering Associate of the Year. 

Applicants can nominate themselves, or be nominated by a manager, team member or member of Engineers Australia’s engineering communities.  

The nomination and eligibility criteria for applicants is the same across each occupational category.  

Nominations for either the emerging professional engineer of the year or professional engineer of the year categories need to state which Engineers Australia division they’re affiliated with. 

Nominations in any of the four associate and technologist categories are initially reviewed by the National Committee for Engineering Associates and Technologists. 

Nominations from or for international members are welcome.

Award applicants are reviewed and judged by the Honours and Awards Committee and winners are announced at Engineers Australia’s Excellence Awards Gala dinner each year. You’ll see this event is advertised on the learning and events page each year in the lead-up. 

These winners will join the long line of engineers who’ve been celebrated for excellence over the award’s 100+ year history. They’ll also get:

  • Profiled in the awards showcase publication.  
  • Ongoing recognition through Engineers Australia Excellence Awards promotion.   
  • Discounts for events and professional development opportunities.  
  • The opportunity to present at local Engineers Australia events. 

The people award winners are decided by a panel of judges selected by the Honours and Awards Committee. The committee is made up of representatives from each of Engineers Australia’s nine divisions and its engineering communities.
