Welding Codes and Standards What and Why

Welding Codes and Standards: What and Why? Join us for a fascinating talk on all things welding! Sasanka Sinha will discuss design and fabrication issues covering the full spectrum of the Australian fabrication industry, cost benefit analysis for welding and welding quality management. 21st Century case studies will be given. The role of designers will be examined as well as the need for welding qualifications and quality management. A range of Standards and Specifications will be discussed including the new AS/NZS 5131, which covers fabrication and erection of structural steelwork, very relevant to structural engineers. AS/NZS 1554.1 Appendix D on communication between various parties, and key elements of ISO 3834 will also be covered.
Welding Codes and Standards What and Why

Microstructure changes in steel which occur when a material is welded will be explained along with the effect of boron content (>8ppm) on hardenability and weldability in high strength steel.
Sasanka will explore the reasons for weld failures including failure due to fatigue. Non-destructive testing in production will also be covered.

Sasanka Sinha is a Senior Welding Engineer at Weld Australia (previously the Welding Technology Institute of Australia). He has extensive experience in fabrication and welding, particularly in the field of ship building, railway wagons, steel plant equipment, boilers, pressure vessels, construction and mining equipment. Sasanka has worked with world leaders such as Babcock and Wilcox, Marion Dresser, Komatsu and Ti–Fab (USA). Sasanka also serves on two Standards Australia Committees, WD002 on welding consumables and WD003 for structural welding and is a Lead Auditor for Company Certification to IIW MCS ISO 3834.
