Accelerated wear and premature replacement of rail infrastructure components even on ‘well’ designed and constructed railways has always been a significant performance issue leading to substantial concerns for rail operators. The performance of rail infrastructure is significantly influenced by the wheel rail interface (WRI). There are substantial benefits of efficiently addressing the interface at the design stage rather than managing it post construction.
The inflated maintenance requirements in many railways indicate that the WRI is apparently being managed in the operational phase of rail project life cycle. The lackadaisical effort in integrating WRI in design is due to WRI being a complex system influenced by a multitude of factors.
The presentation will cover various aspects of the WRI and the key elements associated with WRI, to be addressed at design stage as well as at operational stage.
