Operational Forecasting in the NEM

The forecasting of electricity demand and intermittent renewable generation (such as solar and wind power generation) is more important than ever for the operation of the power system. The speaker will explain how operational load forecasts and wind and solar generation forecasts are developed, how they are used by AEMO to operate the National Electricity Market and initiatives to improve operational forecasting. This presentation will cover the following topics:

Load forecasts: The weather/load relationship, weather and other inputs, high-level methodology

Wind generation and solar generation forecasts: The wind/power relationship and irradiance/power relationship, weather and other inputs, high-level methodology

How the forecasts of load and wind/solar generation are used by AEMO: Processes in the NEM, Dispatch, price forecasts, reliability assessment and outage assessment

Initiatives to improve operational forecasting: Participant self-forecasting, machine learning, situational awareness

Speaker: Jack Fox, AEMO
Jack Fox is a Principal Analyst in the Operational Forecasting team at AEMO, responsible for forecasts of load and renewable generation from 5-minutes to 8 days ahead. He has a decade of experience in the National Electricity Market working at AEMO and its predecessor NEMMCO across roles in Market Systems and Operations, including designing, deploying and operating the demand forecasting system and wind and solar forecasting systems used at AEMO. Jack has bachelor degrees in Computer Engineering (Honours) and Commerce from the University of Sydney.
