About the Presentation

The Uncertain Future of Engineering Disciplines, through a Transport Lens

The digital revolution is changing almost every aspect of our work and our lives. Is the engineering profession thinking deeply enough about what this may really mean? The engineering disciplines taught at Australian universities and practiced in industry and government has slowly grown over the last century and the large base disciplines of civil / structural, mechanical and electrical / electronic engineering are now very longstanding. Newer is systems / software engineering.

But will the relevance of this discipline structure endure into the 21st century? Is transport engineering being grounded in civil engineering sustainable, as engineering transport systems becomes systems-focused and applied at grand city- and region-wide scale? Will similar forces act on other engineering disciplines? This thought provoking presentation will explore the pressures of the digital revolution on the engineering disciplines, through the lens of Transport Engineering.
