Recent dam failures and incidents around the world such as failure of Brumadinho Dam in Brazil (2019) and Saddle Dam B in Laos (2018) and incidents at Whatley Bridge Dam in Derby (2019) and Oroville Dam in California (2017) has focused attention on dam safety management.

The presentation discusses the need for dam owner’s to have a dam safety management program, the requirements of a sound program and describes Water Corporation’s program. Water Corporation manages 107 dams on its program located across Western Australia and with an asset replacement value of $3,000m.

About the speaker:

Michael Somerford has been working in the dams engineering industry for 40 years. His current role with the Water Corporation is Manager Design Dams and Conveyance which includes responsibility for management of Water Corporation’s dam safety program.
