Structures and Seismic Design

An essential CPD event for Structural Engineers that will look at seismic design across Australia. We will look at existing structures and new structures, masonry and concrete in particular. A practical look at things to watch out for, lessons learned and current design requirements given the recent changes to AS3600.

Panel of speakers

Professor Adrian Page
Adrian Page is an Emeritus Professor in the School of Engineering at the University of Newcastle. As a structural engineer he has been involved in various aspects of masonry research and practice for more than 30 years, and has been internationally recognized for his contributions to the fundamental and applied aspects of masonry research and practice.  He has close links with the masonry industry and part of his research has related to the development of design provisions for the Masonry Structures Code AS3700 which he currently chairs.  Adrian is a Fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, an Honorary Fellow of Engineers Australia and a past recipient of the Engineers Australia Warren and Chapman Medals. Adrians presentation will cover the following:

  • Brief look at lessons learned during the Newcastle Earthquake
  • How to tackle an existing building when making alterations (AS3826)
  • Particular concerns with masonry structures

Mark Sturgess
Mark graduated from the University of Newcastle in 2007, and has been part of the Northrop team continuously since this time. Mark is a Principal of Northrop, and is the Newcastle Structural Engineering Discipline manager, managing a team of 25 staff. Mark was awarded the Young Professional Engineer of the Year award by Engineers Australia’s Newcastle division in 2015, which is a recognition of his expertise in his chosen field. Mark is considered to be an expert in the design of concrete structures, and has recently been appointed to the committee of AS3600 to utilise his skills and experience in developing the concrete structured standard in Australia. Marks presentation will cover the following:

  • The seismic difference (a look at building response)
  • Changes to AS3600 driven by earthquake design development
  • Practical details to consider
