A risk analysis, using information from the Global Footprint and recent IPCC reports on Climate Change, shows we need to act soon. Action includes adjusting from the profit and expansion goals of capitalism to those of a Regenerative Economy in which regeneration is an added goal. This is needed because the economy is the only force powerful enough to make good the current damage to the environment that will be essential if we are to save something like our current way of life. Engineers enable the economy, it is time we had a say in how it is run, including what we can do via project evaluation.
This talk is based on peer-reviewed papers delivered at the World Engineers Convention in Melbourne last November, and will be followed by discussion.
It is a prelude to an EA/UWA event considering the big questions around adaptation to future climate change. Details of this event will be provided soon.
