Due to increasing community and government concern over Coronavirus, Engineers Australia has decided to temporarily suspend all face-to-face events. This includes events which meet our previously imposed attendee limits. We will continue to offer members access to our online events and services such as EAXchange. We are also working hard to deliver more for our members in this area over coming months.

The M1 Motorway is one of the highest speed high volume Motorways in Australia. We are approaching completion of construction of the last 2 of 3 major contracts. This presentation will provide an overview of: securing funding; tendering; detailed design; and construction for the M1 Motorway Upgrades: Kariong to Somersby, Tuggerah to Doyalson and Weakleys Drive Intersection upgrades. The Detailed Design component will focus on key processes such as constructability workshops, design reviews and estimating. Some of the most challenging engineering problems to be solved will be examined, including the integration of pavements and traffic staging. Some clever early works contracts that enabled faster and lower risk construction. Construction issues addressed including:

1. Clever traffic management principles for work on Motorways;
2. Pavement construction in Heavily Bound Base, Asphalt and concrete;
3. The diminishing availability of the world’s resources and the need for optimisation is addressed in construction using over 200,000T of recycled concrete pavement as well as re-use of recycled crushed glass in asphalt; and
4. Innovative use of high early strength CSA concrete and some comments on the product.

Speaker: Peter Carson, Senior Project Manager, Transport for NSW
Peter graduated from the University of Newcastle with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and a Bachelor of Surveying in 1997, and later a Masters Degree in Pavements Technology from LaTrobe. Over the past 20 years he has worked in major projects for RTA, RMS and now Transport for NSW, in roles from Project Engineer, Resident Engineer, Project Manager and now Senior Project Manager. Major projects include: Karuah Bypass, Karuah to Bulahdelah Section 1, Bulahdelah Bypass and Hunter Expressway. I am currently managing a series of teams that are designing or constructing: the M1 Motorway upgrades from Tuggerah to Doyalson, Kariong to Somersby, M1/Weakleys Drive intersection, Rankin Park to Jesmond Newcastle Inner City Bypass with early involvement in M1 to Raymond Terrace and Hexham Straight. Peter has also been the Vice President of the Australian Society for Concrete Pavements for the past 6 years.
