
Leadership in any organisation can be a challenge. Combination of this challenge with the fact that the leader has to also deal with both public and private sectors as well as a political body and operational arm takes unique individuals to be able to navigate the Local Government ‘Ship’ through storms. This leadership talk discusses the leadership style of Gary Murphy, Central Coast Council’s CEO.

Gary officially started in his role as the CEO of Central Coast Council on 2 July 2018. Gary’s passion for community, people and collaboration has resulted in leading Central Coast Council through many challenges such as amalgamation of former Gosford and Wyong Councils and the COVID19 pandemic. Central Coast Council is the third largest Council in NSW by population. Gary has thirty years’ experience in local government. He started his career as a Graduate Engineer with Pietermaritzburg Municipality in South Africa and subsequently moved to New Zealand where he became the CEO of Buller District Council. Prior his tenure as the CEO of Central Coast Council Gary was the General Manager of Lismore City Council.
