Virtual reality (VR) is more immersive than ever and is already being used for high-quality training programs and visualisation tools for hazardous & difficult processing environments. Technological advancement has brought us to the point where VR equipment is low cost, portable, high-quality and fully immersive.

This presentation provides insights into the power of VR when coupled with recently developed techniques of extremely high-fidelity reality capture, to reproduce sites and equipment at unprecedented scales and levels of detail.

Guest speakers from Next Generation Asset Management will discuss the current strengths of VR for the following:

  • Training with hazardous sites, equipment and scenarios in low risk (VR) environment
  • Training with equipment that is not often available.
  • Spatial design of buildings and industrial plants, accessibility, constructability, lifting studies, clashes
  • Visualisation of plant and equipment for digital twin environments
  • Increasing engagement in and retention of training

Insights will be provided on the future Virtual Reality-Augmented Reality (AR) crossover where a remotely located engineer will be able to inspect a site by digitally accompanying an onsite operator wearing a head-mounted AR device. Adding SCADA and IoT information sources to this environment will allow simultaneous review of historical and current live operation data into the mixed-reality world.

Matthew Kidd
Manager, Next Generation Asset Management (NGAM) Team at ICD Asia Pacific

Matthew Kidd originally studied as a Chemical Engineer and worked in that role with ICD for many years. Now the manager of the NGAM team he uses the experience gained in real world process plants to guide the solutions that will make operating those and other assets safer, cheaper, more reliable and more efficient. Matt has been tasked with developing advanced technologies such as VR/AR solutions amongst others.

James Oberg
VR specialist, Next Generation Asset Management (NGAM) Team at ICD Asia Pacific

James Oberg is a nerd of all trades, who specialises in VR and the manipulation of point clouds and CAD models. He excels at bringing together the disparate technologies needed to take the raw materials, such as a laser scan, and produce a high quality, efficient and engaging VR environment.

James and the NGAM team have produced interactive VR solutions assisting in emergency response simulations and innovative operator training.
