Gold Coast Artificial Dive Attraction

Start time: 12:00pm AEST. Find out about the development of a world class dive attraction that balanced durability, cost and contractibility with diver experience and the creation of complex marine habitats.
Gold Coast Artificial Dive Attraction

The Gold Coast Artificial Dive Attraction is a purpose-built Artificial Reef that is specifically designed to accelerate marine growth and biodiversity early in its establishment.

This webinar will cover the techniques adopted to create a complex habitat for marine organisms to attach and settle, which once established will maintain a thriving marine community in the medium to longer term by providing refuge and food for marine fish and other associated marine fauna.

Doug Treloar will discuss the investigations and design approach utilised to create a memorable and engaging underwater dive experience that offers best practice outcomes in relation to diver safety, fascination, design, layout and ongoing operation and maintenance.

Cardno has been assisting the City of Gold Coast in the preparation of met-ocean design parameters, ecological and permitting matters, as well as review of stability and design details prepared by the City of Gold Coast’s design, construction and installation contractor (Subcon).

The Dive Attraction includes:

  1. Nine submerged, floating, tethered purpose-built artificial reef structures
  2. Mooring buoys, lines and bottom weights/anchors for diver access
  3. Navigational markers and their moorings

Key challenges include creating a durable and cost-effective structure that modifies water flow in its vicinity to create areas of vertical transition of lateral water flow whilst still ensuring diver safety.
