Australian standard for bulk materials handling structures (AS4324.1) changes

5.00 pm — 6.00 pm AEDT, 06 November 2024
Webinar

Overview

Australia has its standard for material handling machines, such as shiploaders, stackers, and reclaimers, used at ports and mines. The Australian Standard AS4324.1 was first published in 1995 and updated in 2017. There are over 500 such machines in Australia, crucial for exporting iron ore, coal, and other bulk commodities. The ME43 committee is revising the standard to enhance safety, addressing failures from sudden thunderstorm winds, load calculations, and safety factors, making it more user-friendly.

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes for this webinar, include:

  • Importance of AS4324.1: The standard ensures safety in materials handling, with updates addressing specific failure scenarios and aligning with contemporary standards
  • Key revisions: Enhancements include new safety measures, simplified material requirements, and new load cases to prevent failures
  • Industry impact: Adoption of the standard has led to the development of durable machines, benefiting Australia’s export industries and aligning with global standards
  • Future directions: Ongoing revisions aim to improve safety further, simplify requirements, and incorporate industry feedback.
