Welcome to Engineers Australia’s Climate Smart Engineering Conference, CSE23, our flagship event now in its third year. CSE23 will be held at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on 29 and 30 November 2023.

Since its foundation in 2021, CSE has become a focal point for debate and knowledge sharing. Last year, CSE22 explored the ways engineers can navigate the complexities of achieving net zero emissions and drive the transition to a clean energy economy.

This year, a full technical program will support the plenary sessions. CSE23 has a Plenary Program Advisory Council, chaired by myself and a Technical Program Advisory Team chaired by Engineers Australia Chief Engineer Jane MacMaster and comprising the input of 19 Engineers Australia colleges and technical societies.

CSE23 will bring you the latest in world-leading views and engaging debate on solutions to address climate change, responding to extreme events, biodiversity loss, boosting the circular economy and upholding the principles of sustainable practices in engineering.

As creative problem solvers and systems thinkers, engineers are at the forefront of the fight against climate change. The profession stewards the delivery of mitigation and adaptation strategies to address the worst impacts of global warming and innovates to deploy new technologies for a clean fuel and energy future.

We invite you to contribute your ideas and help us continue this important work with us at CSE23.

Engineers Australia members can also claim CPD hours for presenting and attending CSE23.

Abstracts

The 2023 Climate Smart Engineering conference (CSE23) is now open for abstracts.

This is an opportunity to present your work and ideas and have it form an important part of CSE23. Your abstract needs to fit one of the following themes:

  • Circular economy: Doing more with less – efficiencies, optimisation and beneficial reuse.

  • Resilience: Design for a changing world – resilience and disaster resilience.

  • Energy transition: Moving towards a fossil fuel free future.

  • Technology and innovation: Accelerating sustainable outcomes – digitisation and automation.

  • Regeneration:  Engineering to protect and restore nature and biodiversity.

  • Adaptation and mitigation: Beyond zero – net zero pathways, carbon drawdown and CCUS.

  • Social impact: Community-centred engineering (including enhancing social value).

  • Systems thinking approach: Collaboration, shared outcomes, multi-industry, discipline solving.

  • Business management: Financial, data, reporting and other requirements of sustainability in an engineering context.

Abstracts may relate to any sector or industry that has a contribution to reduce emissions, such as:

  • energy
  • transport
  • agriculture
  • waste
  • buildings
  • infrastructure
  • water
  • coastal
  • manufacturing
  • defence
  • space
  • mining.

Authors can submit and present one abstract only. All abstracts, with the exception of poster presentations, are peer-reviewed.

Review the CSE23 abstract submission guidelines and CSE23 speaker and author agreement before you submit.

Submit an abstract

Submit your abstract by 11.59 pm AEST on Wednesday 12 April 2023.

We'll let you know if your abstract has been accepted and what you need to do next.

If your abstract is accepted, you have the choice to present your material in one of the following formats.

Presentation types

Oral

All oral presentations consist of a brief presentation and then a question and answer with the audience.

Technical oral

If you're giving a technical oral presentation, you can choose between one with a paper or one without. We do recommend submitting a paper as these will be published following the conference.

All technical oral presentations should address advancements in technical research with investigations and studies to support. They should also include industry trends if applicable and contribute to a scholarly discourse.

If you wish to submit a paper, choose the 'paper required' option when you submit your abstract. If your abstract is accepted for the conference, a paper will be required and we'll be in touch with further information. In general, papers should be between eight and 15 pages including illustrations, appendices and a biography. All papers from the conference will be published in the RMIT Informit Engineering Collection as 'CSE Proceedings' within three months of the conference. Papers in this collection will be available in the EA publication library and be searchable via Google, Google Scholar, NLA, EBSCO, OCLC, Summon and various other search engines.

Industry oral

Industry oral presentations should showcase industry-specific benchmark practices, lessons learned, project work and relevant strategies. You don't need to submit a paper for an industry oral presentation.

Posters

If you don't wish to speak at the conference you can still provide input with a poster which can be displayed at the conference. Posters can include any sort of visual information including photos, graphics, text, reference tables and figures. All posters should include a summary of your key findings and recommendations for future research or projects. You don't need to submit a paper for a poster presentation.

If you have any questions about abstracts or the various formats please email the secretariat at [email protected].
