Who are our Companions and Affiliates?

Companion or Affiliate membership is open to people who don’t hold formal engineering qualifications but have an active interest in the profession. Although you may not be eligible for other types of membership, your skills or industry experience gives you the opportunity to join Engineers Australia.

Companion members

Our Companions work in engineering but don't hold an engineering qualification. They may work in leadership and management, having reached a career level equivalent to that of our Fellow members, and are typically deemed to be making a significant contribution to engineering.

Affiliate members

Our Affiliates work in engineering but don't hold an engineering qualification and have achieved several years of experience in their field.

Where to start

Visit our member portal to get started. You need ID – such as a passport photo page, current driver licence or copy of your birth certificate and a current CV. Companion member applications should include support from two Fellow members. The National Membership Committee may request supporting letters addressing how you meet the criteria.

How membership is decided

Affiliate membership applications take about three business days to process.

Companion membership applications are considered by our National Membership Committee, comprising engineering peers and volunteers. The committee meets around twice a month to review and approve applications.

The decision to admit someone to membership is at the discretion of the committee and is final.

Membership FAQs

Most membership applications take three to four business days to process. If we need more information to process yours, we'll contact you with a revised timeline.

Companion membership is considered by the National Membership Committee. The committee is made up of engineering peers and volunteers who meet around twice a month to review and approve applications. Once submitted, you will be notified when your application has been considered or if further information may be required.

Your employer has the option to cover your membership fee. You can:

  • Forward your invoice to them.
  • Request the use of the company credit card for payment.
  • Request that they call us directly to make payment on 1300 653 113.

If your employer wants to set up a group invoice for the next financial year, ask them to send an email to [email protected] and we'll be in touch.

Pricing is determined by your membership grade and whether you need a competency assessment.

If you join mid year, we will pro-rata the fee on a monthly basis so that you only pay for the months you're with us.
