When you apply for an assessment with Engineers Australia, you may be asked to supply a detailed CV.
A detailed CV covers your professional experience in reverse chronological order, including a summary of your responsibilities and achievements.
For each engineering role it includes a summary of your responsibilities, projects and achievements. This could include situations, problems and opportunities faced, specialist skills or knowledge used, actions taken to address problems and outcomes achieved.
It may also include a list of your publications, accomplishments, awards, honours and other achievements and contributions to the profession.
What to include in a detailed CV
When applying for an Engineers Australia assessment, there is a minimum amount of information that needs to be included in a detailed CV.
We don’t require the CV in a particular format – the key is to present the information clearly and ensure you’ve covered all information requirements, including the contact details for your referees, before submitting it for assessment.
Mandatory information
- Full name (legal name as shown on your ID)
- Phone number
- Email address
- LinkedIn profile or personal website (if relevant)
- Post nominals
A brief statement of two to three sentences that summarises your career highlights, core skills and goals over the past three to five years.
A list of the core skills you possess, both technical and professional. These can include things like programming languages, project management and communication skills.
For each role, include:
- Position title
- Company name
- Dates of employment (month and year), also documenting any career breaks
- A brief description of your responsibilities and achievements (focusing on quantifiable results or notable contributions)
A list of your academic qualifications, including:
- Degree(s) obtained
- Institution(s) attended and its location
- Completion date (month and year)
- Any notable academic achievements (honours, awards, etc.)
Colour copies or scans of your testamur(s) and academic transcripts will need to be submitted with your application.
Any relevant certificates, courses or professional development programs, including when the course was completed and duration of the training or program. This can include industry-specific certifications or training in tools and software. Mention your level of proficiency in any software packages, IT systems, etc.
Provide two referees.
About referees
Referee checks are a crucial part of the experience evaluation process. They provide independent verification of your professional work experience, competence and ethical conduct.
You'll need to provide the names and work contact details of one or more referees who can confirm your recent work experience.
Your referees:
- Must be Chartered members of Engineers Australia, registered on the NER, or be engineers with more than five years of post-graduate engineering experience.
- Must be individuals who have a recent (within the last five years) professional relationship with you.
- Must be individuals who have supervised or directly worked with you and are familiar with your professional work.
- Preferably work in the same area of engineering practice as you.
- At a minimum, are familiar with you and your engineering work or activities to provide a meaningful reference.
An assessor will contact your referees to discuss you and your experience. They'll also send them documentation to complete prior to our interview with you.
Details of any key projects (or undertakings). Mention any notable personal or professional projects, particularly those showcasing key skills, if not already mentioned in the professional career section.
Volunteer experience can demonstrate additional skills such as teamwork, leadership or problem-solving. This section is particularly valuable you’re early in your career or lack professional experience.
Mention any significant awards, recognitions or honours received, especially those that are relevant to the job or industry you work in.
Indicate any additional languages spoken and your level of proficiency (e.g. basic, intermediate, fluent).

Additional information
If you’re applying for a different membership grade, credential or register, your detailed CV may need to show additional information.
Your detailed CV needs to demonstrate you have at least 15 years of industry experience, are in a senior leadership and management role and highlight how you have played a significant role in shaping the future of the Australian engineering profession.
It will also need to show your level of responsibilities and any contributions to the profession such as attendance on committees, participation in Engineers Australia activities, presentations or publications, time spent mentoring junior engineers, etc.
Your detailed CV needs to demonstrate you have at least 15 years employment in positions of full responsibility in the design or execution of important engineering work, with a strong contribution and connection to the engineering profession.
It will also need to show your career timeline and level of responsibilities and any contributions to the profession such as attendance on committees, participation in Engineers Australia activities, presentations or publications, time spent mentoring junior engineers, etc.
If you’re applying to register on the international registers managed by Engineers Australia, your detailed CV will need to show you meet the experience requirements for the engineering category you’re applying to.
- Professional Engineer: Seven years’ experience including two years in responsible charge of significant engineering work.
- Engineering Technologist: Seven years’ experience including two years in responsible charge of significant engineering technologist work.
- Engineering Associate: Five years’ experience with one year post graduation.
Your engineering experience will need to support the Area of Practice (AoP) you’re applying for and should be the same as your Chartered AoP. You may need to add an AoP to your Chartered credential before you can apply to register on the international registers.
You will need to provide sufficient detail in the professional experience and project sections to:
- Outline your current engineering practice to allow the assessment of your current area(s) of practice as either still relevant or needing to be updated.
- Confirm the required minimum amount of CPD for each current AoP.
- Outline any career breaks taken, detailed by month and year in your career chronology.
If you’re applying for a building industry assessment (BIA) or endorsement (BIE) as part of your state registration application, your detailed CV will need to provide sufficient detail of your experience in the building industry for Victoria and Western Australia, or the building and construction industry for the ACT.
