A look back on a year of engineering in the Northern Territory

Welcome to the last edition of Engineering News for 2022. As we all wrap up for the end of the year, Engineers Australia would like to thank our members for their continued support. We’d like to take the chance now to look back at the achievements of our Northern members and committee groups in 2022, and their contributions to the engineering profession and community.

Engineers Australia Northern farewelled Keely Quinn mid-year, with new General Manager NT and SA, Jan Irvine joining the Engineers Australia team in early July.

Jan Irvine GM of Engineers Australia Northern says she is really looking forward to working with the Northern Committee in 2023 to realise great outcomes across the STEM in schools, migrant engineers and in the diversity and inclusion spaces.

“I also am excited about new ways of working with and for our members to raise the profile of engineers and also the community understanding of what engineers do and achieve,” she says

“This year we’ve been able to collaborate and connect in-person again across the country and it has been brilliant to host visits from many of the Engineers Australia Executive Team allowing us to renew relationships with our members. Engineers Australia would like to thank you for being a part of the progress we’ve made.”

International Women in Engineering Day was celebrated in the Northern Territory with 87 attendees at the ‘Imagining the Future’ gala dinner held under the stars at the award-winning Char restaurant. The keynote speech from Jane MacMaster, Engineers Australia’s Chief Engineer, was a highlight for members to learn about the Engineers Australia Women in Engineering report released in June.

Two pilot programmes were run by the Student and Graduate team this year. ‘Grads Give Back’ and ‘International Students – Engineering Your Future’ were so successful they will be rolled out in more states across 2023.

The award winning ‘sySTEMic program’ was run again in 2022 with 18 students from Casuarina Senior College and 11 industry mentors from Inpex, Territory Generation, Crowley and GHD. The program culminated in a final presentation by students, held in the new CSC STEM Centre and attended by Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Education and Territory Development, Hon Eva Lawler.

Other achievements from the year in Engineers Australia Northern include:

  • Our engineers vs architects trivia night which grew to incorporate the developers. We raised $1300 for the ‘Happy Days’ sticker movement.
  • Territory Generation sponsored Engineers Australia Northern to travel to Katherine to provide STEM to remote schools – helping get engineers into classrooms.
  • The first two Engineering Workforce Credentialing agreements were signed in the NT.
  • Two roundtables were held. The Energy Security Roundtable has now completed a position statement and the Water Security Roundtable are currently developing theirs.

We’ll be kicking off 2023 with a couple of exciting events in the Territory. In February Engineers Australia Northern will hold a CEO Roundtable, hosted by Romilly Madew AO. This will be closely followed by a ‘Meet the Engineering Community’ event, to bring together Darwin’s engineering community, including members, non-members, graduates and students to network and share ideas and information. Engineers Australia Northern events next year will aim to highlight and advance the engineering profession in the Northern Territory.

Engineers Australia’s Northern office holiday shutdown period will run from Friday 23 December 2022 to Friday 6 January 2023 inclusive. During this time our office will be closed and there will not be any events held.

The team wish you a very happy and safe holiday period and we look forward to seeing you in 2023.
