Elevation success story: getting that graduate job

Free for graduate members, the Engineers Australia’s Elevation 2023 Careers Expo will bring together Australia’s top graduate employers. It is an opportunity for young engineers to network with companies keen to develop and grow new talent.

Graduate member from Western Australia William Hidajat attended last year’s Elevation Careers Expo, which gave him the opportunity to meet with various engineering companies.

William says “attending elevation was a great opportunity to meet local engineering companies that are interested and aligned with the Engineers Australia values.”

William secured a graduate position after attending the event and now works as a mechanical engineer with Atteris on subsea and onshore pipelines for oil and gas projects.

“Every company representative was really passionate. They shared stories about their current projects and shared some memorable past experiences,” William explains. “This was where I learned the most about the different engineering roles.”

The event kicks off with a networking masterclass, giving the attendees an opportunity to learn more about how to enquire about roles, how to network effectively, and follow up on applications. William says he found this part of the event very useful.

“The networking masterclass provided me with a new perspective on how to approach networking, making networking more seamless and enjoyable,” William says.

Since attending the careers expo, William has been enjoying his mechanical engineering role with Atteris.

“I have been able to work with experienced subsea and pipeline engineers on projects from concept design, construction, operations and through to decommissioning,” William explains.

“Being involved with each stage of a project allows me to develop an understanding of the sheer complexity of offshore engineering.”

As a recent graduate who was successful in securing a position from attending the Elevation event, William has a few pointers for this year’s attendees:

  • Be curious. If you get the opportunity to chat with an employee, take the opportunity to ask questions about their experience on the job. You can learn a lot from the projects they have already completed.

  • Be prepared to talk about yourself. Companies would like to know a little about yourself, for example, most recent project, volunteering opportunities, what aspect of engineering are you interested in?

  • Follow up with an email or application if you enjoyed or learnt something new from the networking.

If you’re a recent graduate, join us at an Elevation careers event in various locations across the country.
