A new generation of engineers talk building a better world

We reached out to four engineering students to ask them a few questions about this year’s World Engineering Day theme: Engineering for a more resilient world.

What excites you about engineering?

Akshat Sharma - Engineering often involves designing and creating new products, systems, and technologies. For me, the opportunity to be at the forefront of innovation and to create something that has never existed before is what makes engineering exciting.

Jessica Jamal - I am a curious person who loves to problem solve so naturally, what excites me the most in engineering is the number of possibilities and opportunities. There are always new ways to build, or new materials to work with, and we can explore for ourselves and create, discover or see new things that can contribute to the future.

Jackson White - The most exciting thing about engineering for me is the chance for constant innovation in everyday activities such as driving to work, using water and turning lights on.

Gabriela Coelho - Engineering is responsible for tangibly making the world a better place for current and future generations by continuing the development of humanity. The prospect of making lasting, meaningful change in our world is what excites me about engineering.

How does engineering make an impact (for a more resilient world)?

Akshat - Engineering has been, and will always be, making an impact towards building a more resilient world by improving infrastructure, implementing sustainable solutions and developing new technologies.

Jessica - Jessica - Engineers are constantly adapting and building on precedent knowledge to create new or improved systems, services and products that contribute to creating a more resilient world.

Jackson - Engineers move the world towards finding meaningful innovations. These innovations are leading to more resilient infrastructure and better outcomes for stakeholders. This is even more important in current times, with climate change causing more significant natural disasters that have deteriorated current infrastructure to extreme, and even life-threating, conditions.

Gabriela - Where would we be without engineers? To me, engineering is about knowledge, innovation, and progress. Our profession propels humanity into a better future by solving global challenges, which is building a more resilient world for all.
