Sarbjeet was given an inclusion award for his work with international students. This included organising community events, study support groups, social groups, cultural events with traditional gatherings, demonstrating leadership skills, cultural understanding and promoting inclusion. We spoke to him about his experience and what inspires him to give back.

Can you give us an idea of your experience as an engineering student?

Throughout my academic journey as an engineering student, I have faced and overcome many challenges. Initially, the degree seemed daunting, but I was able to persevere with guidance from some experienced individuals and my own strength. I quickly learned the importance of networking and developing transferable skills to help me standout as an engineering graduate. During my second year of study, I was fortunate to secure an engineering opportunity in the industry, which provided me with hands-on experience and knowledge that complimented my academic studies.

I have not only excelled academically but also maintained a balance between my studies and personal interests. Participating in various extracurricular activities has allowed me to develop essential skills such as time management, leadership, and teamwork. These skills are transferable to my future career as an engineer, and I am grateful for these opportunities.

What inspires you to continue your volunteer work and be a role model for others?

I have a deep-seated belief in going the extra mile, and that's why I love volunteering. Seeing the joy on someone's face and knowing that I played a part in making it happen is truly gratifying.

For me, education extends far beyond the classroom. Through volunteering, I've had the chance to explore a diverse array of activities and gain invaluable skills that I can apply in any area of my life. It's a point of pride for me that I always strive to learn and grow, and volunteering has been a key part of that journey.

Overall, I feel fortunate to be able to contribute my time and energy to worthwhile causes. The sense of purpose and fulfilment it brings is truly unparalleled, and I believe that it sets me apart in a meaningful way.

What were your thoughts when you were announced as the winner?

Being announced as the winner of the Geelong Youth Award was an unforgettable moment that sent shivers down my spine. As the host began describing the recipient's qualities and accomplishments, I couldn't help but feel a sense of familiarity and anticipation building within me. When they finally called my name, I was filled with a mix of joy, pride, and gratitude.

Receiving this award was a validation of all the hard work and dedication that I have put into my pursuits. It was a moment of reflection, where I acknowledged the many people who have contributed to my journey and helped shape me into the person I am today. In my short speech, I expressed my deep appreciation and vowed to continue striving for excellence in all that I do.

As I held the award in my hands, I felt a surge of motivation and determination. This recognition was not an endpoint, but a milestone on my journey. I knew that I still had much to learn and accomplish, and I was excited to continue pushing myself to new heights.

What are your hopes for the future?

I'm thrilled to be graduating at the end of 2023, and I'm particularly excited to continue my work as a storm water engineer at the City of Greater Geelong. My team is currently involved in several exciting projects that are making a real difference to our local community, and I'm passionate about contributing to their success.

Beyond my work, I'm also committed to pursuing extracurricular activities that align with my personal and professional interests. I'm keen to explore a range of leadership roles that will help me to develop new skills and challenge myself in new ways. I'm confident that this will help me to identify my niche and find new ways to contribute to my industry and community.
