The South Australian government proposed amendments to the state’s Climate Change and Greenhouse Emissions Reduction Act 2007 including updating emissions reduction targets to reduce emissions by 50 per cent by 2030 from 2005 levels.
Engineers Australia’s team prepared a submission in response to the proposed amendments to outline the need for an urgent transition in the construction and built environment sectors to meet these ambitious targets.
We are supportive of all the changes to the bill that align with Australian Government plans and recognise the critical importance of the targets set in the amendments.
In our submission we outline the need for an urgent transition in the construction and built environment sectors is required to meet SA’s goals.
Specifically, we cover engineering skills challenges, climate change impacts, barriers for adoption and the need to provide sector specific guidance to industry through standards and policy.
Engineers Australia’s South Australia General Manager Jan Irvine says our SA members highlighted the importance of addressing barriers.
“In discussions our members raised concerns about outdated standards, the long-term performance of sustainable products and the need for better climate modelling specific to South Australia,” she said.
“With support from our membership Engineers Australia is ready to provide expertise, guidance, and support to ensure a sustainable and resilient future for South Australia.”
The submission is a result of collaboration between our South Australian members, and the division and policy teams.
