Queensland engineers step up STEM engagement

Our dedicated Queensland members have been going the extra mile throughout June to promote the varying careers available in the engineering profession.

One of Engineers Australia’s key strategic outcomes is to enable a more diverse and engaged engineering community and these members are doing just that.

Between staff and volunteers, we’ve attended six different events. Each with the chance to reach a new cohort of Queensland’s students and to showcase exciting engineering careers.

It all started on 3 June at the Runcorn State High School Careers Fair. Member and electrical engineer Mark Lendich FIEAust CPEng EngExec NER came along with the Queensland Division team to share his knowledge about his extensive career in the energy sector across Queensland.

On 10 June the Regional Committee ran a booth at Questacon in Cairns and on the same day across the state, members and the Queensland Division team attended the St Joseph’s Nudgee College Careers Expo.

Mechanical and systems engineer Nick Hubbard MIEAust and the Cairns Committee ran a stall at the Cairns Showgrounds for Questacon to promote STEM to 2400 attendees across two days. Students were challenged to construct and test straw bridges and design balloon powered vehicles, so they could use their problem-solving skills and test their imaginations.

In Nudgee, Justin Read FIEAust CPEng NER accompanied the Queensland team to the St Josephs’ College Careers Expo. He was able to lend his electrical engineering expertise in conversations with many students looking to learn more about engineering careers.

Over the weekend Queensland General Manager Stacey Rawlings was in Gladstone for the third World Science Festival event. Engineers Australia also held stalls at festival events in Brisbane and Toowoomba.

Our booth at the Gladstone Community Day gave attendees an opportunity to test their problem-solving skills again building straw bridges. Young Engineers Australia Queensland Deputy Chair Allissa Li MIEAust was there to speak with students about her career in engineering.

The Queensland team would like to thank all members that volunteer their time to inspire the next generation of Australia’s engineers. We couldn't do it without you.
