Engineers Australia member Mithun Mohan completed the Standards Australia NEXTgen program and shares how other engineers can take advantage of this initiative.
As a structural engineer Mithun has always felt a strong connection to the standards development process. His journey began during his university days where he was inspired by professors actively involved in developing standards.
Over the years, working closely with industry experts and standards committee members deepened his appreciation for the role standards play in engineering. "I saw the program as an opportunity to pave the way for me to make a meaningful contribution to the development of Australian Standards," Mithun explains.
Australian Standards are integral to Mithun's role as a bridge engineer. "They provide a comprehensive framework for design, ensuring that structures meet specific performance and safety criteria," he says.
"For structural engineers, standards are not just guidelines, they are essential tools that ensure consistency and reliability in our work. They help us design economic structures that meet performance requirements and are safe and durable.”
Standards Australia’s NEXTgen Program provides emerging leaders with an opportunity to become involved in the national and international standardisation processes supporting Australian industry and government.
"Through face-to-face workshops at Standards Australia's Sydney office and numerous online sessions, I gained valuable insights into the standards development process and learned the skills to be an effective committee member," Mithun says.
"The program also provided a platform to interact with domain experts from across the country, enhancing my understanding of diverse perspectives.” Additionally, the program's guidance on negotiation and effective communication skills has positively impacted his role and helped him navigate complex situations.
Participating in the NEXTgen program has been a rewarding experience for Mithun. "I've gained a deeper understanding of the process of developing Australian Standards, he says. “The opportunity to observe actual committee meetings was particularly enlightening, giving me a firsthand look at how Australian standards are shaped.
“The skills I gained from this program are not only essential for standards development but have also enhanced my overall professional capabilities."
