Celebrating neurodiversity with the Western Australian Inclusion and Diversity Committee

The committee is made up of volunteer engineers from across the state, working together to inform and educate engineers on inclusive environments.

They are always on the lookout for new members who are keen to bring their diverse perspectives to the group. Email [email protected] to express your interest.

Neurodiversity has been a focus area for the group. October is significant month for raising awareness about neurodiversity, featuring awareness days highlighting dysgraphia, dyspraxia, dyslexia and ADHD and the committee has been working hard to shed light on the benefits of inclusion.

Emily Kendall, a chemical engineer, member of the Engineers Australia Inclusion and Diversity committee and WA excellence award nominee, says inclusion can lead to exceptional results for engineers.

“In engineering, where problem-solving, creativity and innovation are vital, the inclusion of neurodiverse individuals can offer fresh insights and approaches. Inclusive environments can unlock creativity and innovation that benefits not just the engineering industry but society as a whole,” she says.

Emily is an advocate for neuro-inclusion and she knows first hand the challenges of feeling valued and understood in traditional educational and workplace settings, where unique ways of thinking were seen as threats rather than opportunities.

“When those who think differently feel safe and valued, they are more likely to contribute their unique talents. I believe companies which actively seek to include neurodiverse individuals are better positioned to adapt to changing market demands and foster innovation.”

She says a focus on communicating in a particular way and behaving to norms can prevent neurodiverse students from enrolling in engineering or unleashing their full potential when they join the workforce.

“By being more open-minded, accommodating and respectful, engineers can think out of the box and come up with creative ideas that push society forward.”
