Tassie’s engineering year in review

As the year draws to a close, Engineers Australia would like to take a moment to express thanks to our Tasmania members for your continued support. This will be the last edition of Engineering News for 2024. This is a great time to reflect on the achievements of our Tasmania members and committee groups in 2024 and your contributions to the engineering profession and community.

It has been a year of change for the Tasmania team with General Manager, and face of the Division, Darren Beattie making the move to Brisbane to take on the General Manager role for Queensland.

After a lengthy recruitment process, we are pleased to welcome Joanne Moses. Stepping into the role in late November, Jo has already got to work introducing herself to members across the state and jumping right into delivering local activities. Feel free to reach out to Jo if you would like to connect.

As an Engineers Australia member you're at the heart of the work we do to create positive, sustainable change that has an impact on the community. Your engineering expertise and guidance helps us to work with business, government and universities to push for progress and we’d like to thank you for the invaluable insight you’ve provided across the year.

This year Tasmania held our annual Careers Fair in March. With support from the UTAS School of Engineering we helped to connect 200-plus university students directly with industry representatives from more than 25 local engineering employers.

In April we hosted Engineers Australia’s National President, Board and Executive for a three-day visit with multiple events throughout the state. The tour kicked off in Hobart with the National President Listening Session followed by site visits and member events in the north of the state. The whirlwind visit finished with a National Board meeting at the Australian Maritime College in Launceston where local committee members were invited to present to the Board.

We were also thrilled to deliver our Driving Diversity Scholarship Program once again - with support from our partners at Hydro Tasmania and Caterpillar Underground Mining. Thanks to the generous support of these partners, we were able to award three $5000 cash scholarships to female first year engineering students. The worthy recipients were presented with their scholarships at this year’s International Women in Engineering Day lunch in Hobart.

One of our additional priorities for 2024 was STEM outreach. Throughout the year we were proud to be involved with a range of events including:

  • Agfest Schools Day
  • The Civil Contractors Federation Build and Construct Careers Expo
  • Hobart City High School Thinking Forward Forum
  • The Festival of Bright Ideas.

The Tasmania Division would also like to take a moment to acknowledge our outgoing Division Committee President Justin O’Connor for his commitment to Engineers Australia as a whole and his leadership on a local level. Justin has been our President for the last two years; during which he has strived to represent the engineering profession, raise the profile of working engineers and advocated for increased representation for engineers as decision makers at all levels. We thank him for his service and leadership.

We'd also like to welcome our incoming President Max Moller who will be beginning his two-year term at the start of 2025. You’ll learn more about Max and the rest of the Tasmania Committee for 2025/26 in the first edition of Engineering News for 2025, so keep an eye out.

Engineers Australia’s holiday shutdown period will run from 20 December 2024 to 3 January 2025 inclusive. During this time our office will be closed and there will not be any events held.

We wish you all the best over the holiday period and into 2025.
