Introducing WA’s committee for 2025

This year, the Division Committee will continue advocating for the profession in the lead up to the WA State Election and beyond to bring regionally informed advice to the Engineers Australia Board.

Continuing for a second term in their roles as WA President and Deputy President, Lewis Macdonald and Allison Selman hosted a planning day in mid-January with the committee to confirm activity for the year across our focus areas in Western Australia.

“As the WA President of Engineers Australia, I am proud to share our policy position developed in advance of the WA State Election in March 2025,” Mr. Macdonald said.

“This position was crafted by Engineers Australia WA Division in consultation with our members, recognising the critical role engineers play in shaping our state's future. The work of engineers intersects with every aspect of the modern world, making our contributions vital to community and policy discussions.”

The WA Division Committee’s policy position is built around five key pillars, addressing crucial areas for the advancement of Western Australia. The pillars are; sustainable and resilient infrastructure, a comprehensive WA energy transition plan, setting up a skilled and diverse engineering workforce, a nationally consistent engineering registration scheme and the appointment of a WA Chief Engineer.

Engineers Australia is pleased to welcome new member Dr Jeremy Leggoe, to work alongside those continuing on the WA Division Committee for 2025.

Jeremy graduated from UWA with a degree in mechanical engineering. He’s been a Chartered engineer since 1991 and completed a PhD in mechanical engineering in 1996. He took up a postdoctoral appointment at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. Since 2008, Jeremy has held the role of Director for the Cooperative Education for Enterprise Development (CEED) program at UWA and is a member of the Chemical Engineering Department. The CEED program sets up and manages industry sponsored research projects for students, offering projects at both UWA and Curtin. He also co-created and coordinated the novel intensive unit GENG3000, which engages students with the engineering profession and develops professional skills they will need in the engineering workplace. Currently Jeremy serves as UWA’s Industry Engagement portfolio co-lead for the School of Engineering. His research interests lie in fluid mechanics and computational fluid dynamics.

At the end of 2024, we acknowledged the significant contributions of two outgoing WA Division Committee members.

We will remain in close contact with both - Jillian Formentin in her capacity as Engineers Australia’s Professional Engineer of the Year for 2024 and Bill Marmion in his role as Chair of the National Honours and Awards Committee.

The WA Division Committee welcomes members’ ideas on how to serve the profession in WA. You can contact them by sending an email to [email protected]
