Meet Sam Asher, graduate member and associate advisor

Sam has made the transition from pure engineering into advisory and project management consulting. He chats to us about his experience making this career pivot.

What inspired you to pursue mechanical engineering?

I decided to undertake a mechanical engineering degree because I was interested in learning how to solve complex problems. I also performed well in mathematics during my school years, which aligned well.

Can you tell us more about your new role and why the transition into advisory/consultancy work?

After I graduated, I chose to explore the consulting path, having already gained 18 months of experience in engineering consulting. My current role is at a public purpose consulting firm that advises on and delivers some of Australia's largest and most complex infrastructure projects and focuses on advisory and project management consulting, rather than pure engineering.

My 18 months in the engineering industry revealed my passion for problem-solving, which is a key component of my current role. This transition allows me to leverage my engineering background while engaging in strategic and impactful advisory work, and project management.

How have you taken advantage of your Engineers Australia membership?

While I was studying, I volunteered as an Engineers Australia student ambassador. This gave me opportunities to mingle with industry people, promote and coordinate events for fellow students and build my professional network.

What inspires you to volunteer and what do you get out of it?

After recognising Engineers Australia's significant role in the industry, I saw an excellent opportunity to not only expand my network but also to educate Macquarie University students about the incredible opportunities on offer.
