Engineers Australia President Nick Fleming and CEO Dr Bronwyn Evans recently joined the Canberra Division for its first Fellows Lunch for 2021.

A sell out event, the lunch was a chance for the Canberra Division to acknowledge and celebrate engineers receiving Fellows certificates in recognition of their work and achievement of the highest standards of technical and professional excellence.

Engineers Australia Fellows are seen as an elite group of engineers. To become a Fellow with Engineers Australia enables these engineers to be recognised amongst the true leaders of the industry and profession.

For this celebration the 2020 Engineers Australia Professional Engineer of the Year, Rear Admiral Colin Lawrence AM provided a leadership address to current and emerging leaders.

He reflected on his career in the Australian Navy and his most recent role there as Head of Navy Engineering.

Lawrence shared some insight as to his progression as a leader, including his early misunderstanding that effective leadership was centred around power and authority.

In total, 14 engineers were celebrated for their work to achieve Fellow status.

To conclude his address, Lawrence reflected on the vast changing nature of the engineering profession.

“The rate of technological change is now almost beyond comprehension. As a profession, we must keep up and make sure that it doesn’t happen around us,” he said.

“Engineers make good leaders, our code of ethics has an important place in the leadership toolbox.”

Nominations for Member of the Year 2021 are now open.
