As engineering professional registration requirements evolve across the country, Engineers Australia will be involved with assessments for registration in New South Wales and Victoria.
Detailed information on both assessment processes and other registration updates can be found on the the Engineers Australia Statutory Registration page.
New South Wales changes
NSW Fair Trading will register design practitioners and professional engineers under the Design and Building Practitioners Act 2020 from 1 July 2021.
To register in NSW, you will need to go to the NSW Fair Trading website. Some registration applicants may be required to attach a Certificate of Competency provided by Engineers Australia. You can find information about whether you need an Engineers Australia Certificate of Competency on the NSW Fair Trading website.
Engineers Australia is now assisting NSW Fair Trading by providing a range of competency assessments for registration of Professional Engineers.
If you require a Certificate of Competency from Engineers Australia, you will have to undergo one of four specific competency assessments. Engineers Australia will be assessing three forms of competency assessments for registration of professional engineers, and one form of assessment of knowledge and skills for registration of design practitioners - vertical transportation.
- Competency Assessment PE1 – pre-1989 engineering qualification
- Competency Assessment PE2 – less than two years of Australian experience
- Competency Assessment PE3 – non-accredited qualifications and experience
- Knowledge and Skills Assessment DP(VT) – knowledge and skills of vertical transportation systems
More information on each of the assessments can be found on the Engineers Australia NSW Statutory Registration page.
Engineers Australia will play a critical role in the Victorian Government's Professional Engineers Registration Scheme, having been approved as an assessment entity.
The scheme will be administered by the Business Licensing Authority (BLA) and Engineers Australia will provide an assessment pathway for professional engineers. This pathway will be a simple streamlined method for members to register on the Victorian Government’s Professional Engineers Registration Scheme.
Chartered and NER professional engineers in Victoria, will be deemed assessed in their area of practice. Those who are not members of Engineers Australia will also be able to apply for an assessment through Engineers Australia via the BLA-direct pathway.
Please continue to check the Statutory Registration page for up-to-date information on registration requirements throughout Australia.
