Engineers Australia – Newcastle General Manager, Helen Link, said the awards provide an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the impact of local engineers.

“These awards recognise and reward the outstanding achievements of engineers and help promote the important role they play in supporting our community, and our country,” said Ms Link.

“Engineers will play a significant role in the plan to transform Newcastle to a smart, liveable and sustainable global city by 2030, and I congratulate our recipients for their important contribution.”

Award recipients

Ian Webster – Professional Engineer of the Year

Ian Webster is Group Engineering Manager at Ampcontrol, and Conjoint Senior Fellow, School of Electrical Engineering and Computing at the University of Newcastle.

He has held numerous leadership roles with national and international engineering bodies, and has led several high-profile industrial projects, most recently the development of an ICU Emergency Ventilator. This project was motivated by the COVID-19 pandemic and saw Ian successfully lead the team who delivered a working ventilator at the John Hunter Hospital in just 18 days.

Mr Webster was also recognised as a joint winner of the MA Sargent Medal by the College of Electrical Engineers and the College of ITEE Engineers. It is named in honour of Dr Michael Anthony (Mike) Sargent, an outstanding Australian electrical engineer.

Thomas Steigler – Young Professional Engineer of the Year

As a research engineer with Ampcontrol’s Group Engineering, Thomas Steigler has presented research to the IEC joint working group JWG45, led the pneumatic system design and testing of a medical ventilator, and acted as lead electrical design engineer for a collaborative, first of its kind residential hydrogen energy storage unit.

Two Engineers Australia medals – acknowledging notable engineering contributions to the community – were also handed out on the night to volunteers Michael Ward and Jo Withford.

The Australian Engineering Excellence Awards Program seeks to recognise and reward outstanding achievement in engineering. Regional winners will go on to represent their division at the national awards.
