Commencing operation in Burnie, Tasmania in 1975, this business has grown to a truly global operation selling underground mining hard rock vehicles to over 50 countries across the globe.

Caterpillar Underground Mining has a strong commitment to all aspects of Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) in the workplace and we are acutely aware of the benefits a robust D&I strategy can bring for both our business and employees. We proudly have a diverse workforce in Burnie, with over 20 different nationalities represented at the facility.

Caterpillar Underground Mining has a workforce of approximately 170 people operating out of South Burnie on Tasmania’s North-West Coast, responsible for the research and development, testing, marketing and support of Caterpillar’s Underground hard rock vehicle product line.  The original birthplace of manufacturing for Caterpillar’s Underground Mining Load- Haul-Dump (LHD) “Loaders”, and Underground Articulated Trucks (UAT) “Trucks”, the Burnie facility is now the centre of excellence for engineering design and development, autonomous operation solutions and prototype assembly and testing of these vehicles.
