Smith's Stump-Jump Plough, 1876-

Description

Richard Bowyer Smith (1837-1919) of Kalkabury, SA, is credited with the first stump-jump plough design.

In August 1876 Richard and his brother Clarence publically demonstrated their vixen three furrow gravity-restored plough which could cope with obstacles where set-ploughs would fail.

Clarence (Clarry) Smith manufactured stump-jump ploughs at Ardrossan from 1880-1935. Stump-jumping became an established principle on Australian tillage equipment which continues in more sophisticated forms today.
