2 years on: TrackStar Alliance’s $475 million award-winning transport corridor project Wednesday, 15 June 2016

TrackStar Alliance’s $475 million Richlands to Springfield corridor upgrade won the biennial RW Hawken Award – Overall Project Winner at the 2014 AEEA Queensland Awards.

The project features 9.5km of dual-track passenger rail lines, two stations, seven rail bridges and 1.5km of elevated rail structures, including an 815m long viaduct and a 5.5km Centenary Highway upgrade.

Area Design Manager of the TrackStar Alliance (a partnership between Thiess, AECOM, Aurecon, Queensland Rail and Department of Transport and Main Roads) Kate Taylor MIEAust CPEng NER said that winning the Award was significant because it gave the Alliance the opportunity to celebrate its achievement and promote engineering’s broader contribution.

“It has been rewarding to formally recognise all the hard work and effort made by the individuals and teams that came together to achieve the outcomes,” Mrs Taylor said. “Too often we move on to the next project without taking the time to celebrate the success and showcase the contribution that engineering makes to the wider community.”

Recognised as an example of industry best practice, the transport corridor is being embraced by the user community, especially train drivers, passengers and commuters.

“I feel immense pride every time the Richlands to Springfield project is referred to as an example of excellence and best practice in the industry,” Mrs Taylor said. “I am reminded of the successful outcomes achieved each time I meet a train driver who tells me how it is their favourite line to operate on, and of the public pride expressed in the station facilities and enhanced connectivity for the community.”

The Award judges were particularly impressed by the Alliance partners’ long-term view, comprehensive risk management framework, skilful engineering solutions, high-level community engagement and education, and the project’s WHS initiative Steps Towards Zero, which was also recognised in the Queensland Safe Work Awards.
