2015 Design and Build champions announced! Thursday, 01 October 2015

For 28 years Engineers Australia’s National Committee on Engineering Design (NCED) has challenged over 50,000 mechanical engineering university students from the Asia Pacific region with the Warman Design and Build competition.

Proudly sponsored by Weir Minerals, the competition provides first and second year students with a practical introduction to applying their theory - and some of the problems that may be encountered in producing a successful outcome!

Presented with a concept that they are required to understand, without any prior knowledge and experience, students are faced with the task of designing and building a device to complete the project.

This year, Project EXTRACT tasked the competitors with developing an autonomous ground based system able to collect resources through a series of obstacles and deliver them to an underground bunker.

On Sunday 27 September, the winning teams from 15 universities around Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia came together at Australian Technology Park in Sydney to compete in the 2015 National Finals.

RMIT University were awarded first place with their device called ‘Shovel Bot Mach 1’, along with winners in the following categories

  • National Finals First Place = RMIT University, Melbourne
  • National Finals Second Place = University of Canterbury, New Zealand
  • National Finals Third Place = Monash University, Malaysia
  • Weir Judges Prize = UNSW, Canberra
  • NCED Judges Best Design Prize = University of South Australia

Engineers Australia would like to congratulate all the students who participated, and hope this experience has offered them a better understanding of creative processes and using their knowledge to provide innovative solutions.

We look forward to an exciting new challenge for 2016!
