Congratulations to the winners of the 2015 Engineering Excellence Awards

The Engineering Excellence Awards for 2015 took place on Friday 29th May with 16 finalist projects in the running. Four Excellence Awards were presented along with four Highly Commended achievements and one Regional Award. The overall winner of the GHD Award was the "Solar GRANEX® Co-Generation Plant at the Wallsend Public Pool:  A Low-Cost Green Energy Solution,' entered by University of Newcastle and partners.

Other acknowledgements at the event were: Prof Rob Melchers who was recognised on becoming an Honourary Fellow; and a number of devoted members and volunteers who were recognised through the dedication of a Pin Oak Tree in their name at the National Arboretum.

Congratulations to all finalists and winners. The field of finalists really did showcase the amazing engineering being carried out right here in Newcastle Division.

Engineering Excellence Award Winners:

UGL FlexiCurve Bogie Family
Entered by UGL
Excellence Award sponsored by NSW Roads & Maritime Services

The FlexiCurve bogie is UGL’s premium locomotive bogie, providing significant benefits in locomotive performance, reliability and maintainability. FlexiCurve is an innovative, yaw-relaxed, self-steering design with significant benefits over traditional bogie designs. UGL has designed FlexiCurve as a family of bogies for application over a range of track gauges and locomotive mass; positioning it as a product for the global rail market.

Solar GRANEX® Co-Generation Plant at the Wallsend Public Pool:  A Low-Cost Green Energy Solution
Entered by University of Newcastle and partners

This project involved the design; construction, commissioning and field trials of a novel cogeneration plant for delivering low-cost and emission-free heat (»100 kWth) and power (»30 kWe) into the Wallsend Public Swimming Centre at Newcastle. The project focused on direct solar thermal heating of an organic fluid cycled through the GRANEX® heat engine invented by Prof Moghtaderi and Dr Doroodchi of the University of Newcastle. The technology delivers higher performance efficiencies meanwhile lowering field cost.

The CS3 Continuity Test System - An Innovative Evolution in Electrical Testing Improving Safety for the Community
Entered by Safearth Consulting

The need to accurately analyse, test and maintain systems of our electricity networks is crucially important, considering we live within the earthing systems of our electricity networks.  Safearth's engineering excellence project provides an innovative evolution in electrical testing, improving safety for the community.  It is the design, manufacture and sale of the CS3 Continuity Test System.  CS3 will confirm integrity of earthing connections, to sub-milliohm precision, in the noisy environments of modern electrical facilities.

Arc Fault Venting - Simulation and Practice
Entered by Ampcontrol

Arc faults in electrical circuits present a hazard when internal pressurisation results in catastrophic failure of the enclosure housing. Venting is used to prevent enclosure failure.  Ampcontrol has developed a method of synthesising arc faults using energetic materials, providing a lower cost, fast turnaround and portable approach to repeatable testing.  A novel low mass arc vent cover has been developed exploiting composite construction to facilitate high speed activation, enhancing the safety of personnel and equipment.

Overall Winner of the GHD Award:

Solar Granex Co-Generation Plant at the Wallsend Public Pool: A Low-Cost Green Energy Solution
Entered by University of Newcastle with partners: NIER, Granite Power, ARENA, Nepsolar, NCC, Newcastle Innovation, Yokogawa and Archer

Regional Award

Iluka Sewerage Scheme
Entered by NSW Public Works with Clarence Valley Council, NSW Office of Water and Sustainable Futures Australia

Planning for Iluka sewerage was challenged by community polarisation regarding reticulated sewerage and a very sensitive receiving environment. An affordable scheme was developed using an innovative community engagement process called “Dealing with our own Situation” which overcame these challenges. Innovative procurement including contract “packaging”, “Early Tendering Involvement” and relationship contracting successfully overcame difficulties presented by latent conditions within budget. The scheme demonstrates an effective partnership of government agencies, local government, contractors and the community.
