CLM Mentoring Program discussing 'People Management' Wednesday, 12 August 2015

The College of Leadership and Management (CLM) Sydney Branch held its 2015 Mentoring Program Mid-Term event on the 14th July 2015. Over twenty participants from thirteen mentor/mentee pairs attended this event. Discussion circles with the mentors and mentees were held concurrently so that each group could share their learnings and experiences. Brendan Ng, CLM Mentoring Committee, led the mentee group discussion and Ellen Gorissen, Chair of the CLM Sydney Branch Committee, facilitated the discussion with the mentors. The evaluation focused on the participants and the challenges they face under the current market fluctuation.

The challenges raised in the discussions included people management, namely how to establish effective communication linkages and the challenges of managing a team working concurrently in multi-geographical locations. The mentees were interested in how they could enhance their technical expertise, while still developing their management capability. The mentees also saw challenges in managing up.

The mid-term event concluded with mentors and mentees coming together to debrief and network. Following on from this session, the 2015 CLM Sydney mentoring program will conclude in October in the form of a wrap-up meeting where both mentors and mentees can provide feedback on the program. The feedback from this evaluation and the online survey results will be fed into the 2016 CLM Sydney Mentoring Program.
