College Chair Introduction Friday, 10 February 2017

Welcome to the February 2017 issue of Monitor, the e-newsletter for the College of Information, Telecommunications and Electronic Engineering (ITEE).

One of the highlights of the last Australian Engineering Excellence Awards in November 2016, was the “Special Mention to ITEE College Board for the IoT Webinar series #AusEngCon” for the series leaders Geoff Sizer and Tim Kannegieter”. The Applied Internet of Things (IoT) Community of Practice was launched in July 2016 as a vehicle to facilitate collaboration amongst users and implementers of IoT systems. So far, 500+ IoT members have joined the community. Details of the IoT Community of Practice can be found in Monitor’s October 2016 edition.

Following this success, the College Board has decided to introduce a Software Engineering Community of Practice. Should you be interested in joining the Board in establishing this new Community, please contact me via [email protected]

In response to the Board’s invitation for nomination of new members, it received 15 high quality nominations. After thoughtful consideration of all submissions, the Board decided to invite Ambarish Natu of the Australian Taxation Office, Anthony Minasian of Arup, and Catherine Nicholson of NetComm Wireless to join the Board from January 2017. I would like to take this opportunity to offer my thanks to all those who enthusiastically responded to the Board’s invitation and submitted nominations.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Geoff Sizer for his leadership of the Board over the last two years. From January 2017, Geoff will continue his engagement with the Board in the role of Immediate Past Chair.

I consider it a great privilege and an honour to be elected to lead the College over the 2017–2018 term. I was with the research and development industry sector for almost two decades and have now been with academia for about the same period of time. In my career, I dealt with numerous automation and control and decision-making projects, from plant automation to drugs modelling, robotics, production line automation, aircraft engine control, driverless vehicles and intelligent transport systems. My research projects have been funded by agencies from Australia, France, Germany, Japan and USA and profiled by a number of media outlets both nationally and internationally.

I look forward to working with you, the ITEE College members. This issue of Monitor is just one of numerous ways we can explore to communicate with each other. Please do not wait until the next issue should you wish to get in touch with me - my email is [email protected]
